July 13, 2009 - Healthy Border 2010 Midterm Report
The United States-México Border Health Commission (BHC) is pleased to make available the Healthy Border 2010 Midterm Review-U.S. Border Area. This report is a review of Healthy Border 2010 at mid-decade. The Healthy Border 2010 initiative, established by the BHC in March of 2001, aims to improve the health of border residents and eliminate health disparities through an effort that focuses attention on major health issues in the region.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
From the beginning, the U.S. portion of the Healthy Border 2010 initiative included plans for a mid-decade review. The aim was to ensure that the Healthy Border 2010 initiative remains current, accurate, and relevant. However, it was clear from the outset of the initiative that obtaining detailed data on 21 objectives for 44 border counties, spread across four states, would be difficult. Nearly one-quarter of the Healthy Border objectives were established as developmental because they had no measurable data available at the beginning of the decade. However, they were proposed with the assumption that appropriate data would be available by mid-decade. This report reviews the status of the 21 U.S. Healthy Border objectives as of 2005.
This report may be of interest to border health partners and others in the United States – México border region.
