Border Lead Outreach Project

The U.S.-México Border Health Commission (BHC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) convened the U.S.-México Lead Meeting on September 28-29, 2006, in La Jolla, California. The meeting brought together representatives of key U.S. and México agencies addressing the public health impact of exposure to lead in candy, ceramic ware, and home remedies. The objectives of the meeting included: sharing information on the public health impact of exposure to lead in candy, ceramic ware, and home remedies in the U.S. and México; identifying priority issues for the U.S. and México related to the issue; and, identifying collaborative binational initiatives to identify both specific products posing health risks in the U.S. and México as well as non-lead-based alternatives to those products.

As a result of the meeting, the following were established : (1) U.S.-México Lead Working Group with representation from the U.S.-México Border Health Commission (U.S. and México Sections), COFEPRIS, CDC, FDA, and U.S. State Offices of Border Health and State Lead Programs; (2) creation of two binational subcommittees that will have oversight by the Working Group for implementation of action plans on candy and ceramic ware; and (3) finalize the reports prepared by the CDPH in collaboration with other U.S. federal and state agencies on Lead Exposures Resulting from Candy Products and Lead Exposures Resulting from Home Remedies and Ceramic Ware.
