Mark Abdoo
Acting Director, Office of the AmericasMark Abdoo is the Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Global Health Affairs (OGHA) in the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services; his position of record is Director for Multilateral Affairs and the Middle East. Before assuming that position in July 2007, he served as an International Health Analyst in OGHA. Mr. Abdoo received a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of the Holy Cross, and is a Doctoral candidate at Brown University. Before joining OGHA, he lived in Asia for eight years, doing private-sector consulting, and, before that, was an adjunct faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Mr. Abdoo was head of the U.S. delegation to the G-8 Health Experts meetings in 2008 and 2009. He has served as a negotiator on U.S. delegations to a number of international conferences, and was the lead U.S. negotiator for the Health Agenda for the Americas 2008-2015; the Buenos Aires 30/15 Declaration, “Towards a Health Strategy for Equity, Based on Primary Health Care;” the Toyako Framework for Action (the health experts’ report of the 2008 G-8 Toyako Summit); and the 2009 G-8 health experts’ report, which is yet to be released. He was the deputy lead U.S. negotiator for the World Health Organization (WHO) Intergovernmental Working Group on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property and for the WHO Intergovernmental Meeting on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness. He oversees HHS inputs to cross-cutting initiatives, including the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogues, and co-chairs the U.S. government-wide interagency group on trade and health. Since 2006, he has served as an alternate U.S. representative to the WHO Executive Board; from 2005-2007; he served as an advisor to the U.S. Delegation to the World Health Assembly (WHA); and in 2008 and 2009 as an alternate delegate to the WHA. Mr. Abdoo has traveled abroad extensively in support of HHS’s bilateral and multilateral programs.
